2016 Intentions

It’s a new year, a fresh start, and the beginning of a ton of unrealistic resolutions people will make. Instead of making resolutions this year I have decided to set 2016 intentions in hopes that it will become the best year of my life. I encourage you all to also set intentions!

Here are some simple examples of what those things could be.

1. Leave the past in the past

Like they say, you can’t start the next chapter if you’re stuck rereading the last one. It’s time to turn the page and start living in the present. Your past is your past for a reason, it’s already behind you and there’s nothing you can do about it. Stop worrying about previously lived things and start worrying about what you’re going to do next.

2. Breathe more fresh air

Whether you take more walks, runs, or cycles, you just need to spend more time outside. Being outside in fresh air for me is a mental refresher. My mind becomes still and I feel more connected to earth than I do inside four walls. I want to try to be outside for at least 30 minutes a day breathing in that mountain air.

3. Detox from the digital world

This goes with number 2, you need to put that phone down, shut that laptop, turn the television off, and make proper memories. Unplug and actually live life through your eyes and not through a screen.

4. Realize social media isn’t real life

In this day and age everyone and their cat is on social media, but you need to remember social media isn’t real. People use social media to seem like the best possible version of what they want to be. Likes and shares and views do not matter. This is one of my biggest things I struggle with because I’m an internet kid. I want to stop being addicted to my phone and computer and live more freely.

5. Listen more

Stop talking for a second and just listen. Listen to the cars zipping by you, the people around you, the birds chirping, and your friends talking to you. Put your phone away while you’re at dinner or hanging out with your friends and family. Have a proper life heart to heart with someone. I promise you’ll learn more during those conversations than you will scrolling through social media like a zombie.

6. Eat better

Try to eat colourful and rich foods. Forget about the take-out food and the crappy sugary fake foods and get into the healthy fruits and vegetables. I mean I will never give up my addiction to popcorn, but one thing I want to do is eat more of a plant based diet. Living in Kelowna in the summer is going to be amazing because there are fruit stands and farmers markets everywhere.

7. Educate yourself

You don’t need to go to school to learn something. Read a book, watch a documentary, learn a new skill… just do something that makes your brain work.

8. Get rid of the negativity in your life

Give up on those people that do not do anything good for your life. Surround yourself with positive and inspiring people and good things will happen. Spend your time with people who want to talk to you because they’re interested in your thoughts.

9. Listen to more music

turn up your stereo, your laptop speakers, your iPhone, or your Spotify, and just crank those tunes. One of the most important things in my life is music. Music helps me get rid of my anxiety, it helps relax me, and it also makes me feel connected and excited for the future. My favourite band right now is the Mighty Oaks.

10. Dance more

Dancing is just as important as listening to more music. Find music that makes you want to get off your chair and groove. Dancing releases so much inside of you and you feel like a free soul. I love finding music that when I’m alone I still feel like dancing and I do, because it’s so beneficial to your mental health. Youth by Troye Sivan is the latest song that makes me dance whenever I listen to it.

11. Connect with yourself

There’s nothing better than being proud of who you are. Last year I embarked on a journey of meditation, yoga, and just feeling okay with who I am. I’ve been doing a lot of research into manifesting and visualizing the life I want and it’s done me wonders already. I feel the most connected to my mind and soul than I have ever felt before.

Bonus: Buy memories not things.

One of my biggest things I want to accomplish this year is travelling and seeing more. Material things are not worth the money, but memories are. Find a travel buddy and go. You only live once so try to see as much as you can… the world is a huge place.

What intentions are you setting for 2016?

To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.

    Your intentions sound great, good luck. I need to unplug more, that’s why I’m wanting to read 8+ books this year. I read 6 this in 2015 but I got a late start.
