I’ve always had cats, which makes it easy for me to call myself a crazy cat lady, and be okay with it, because it’s completely and utterly true. My childhood cat Dilly in Ontario was my best friend, MacArthur in Nova Scotia was so cuddly and loveable, and Milo in Dartmouth was one crazy creature.
When I moved to Thompson almost two years ago I didn’t have that companion, or someone to come home to every night. My roommate and I spoke about getting a cat, and we decided that we would go forward with it.
We decided we wanted to get our cat from our local humane society, and we wanted an olderish cat, that really needed the love and support that we could give them.
When we got to the shelter there was only one cat in the cat room, and it was this beautifully shy orange tabby cat, and I instantly felt connected to him. We did the paper work, and we took the little guy back home.
We named him Obi (yes after Star Wars, my roommate picked it), and since that day, he’s been my main man. Obi was not in a good spot before I saved him, and it took a long time for him to feel safe around me, but now he thinks he’s the king of the house.
Yes I know I sound crazy, but the unconditional love that you feel when you have a pet is something I’ve never felt before, much like having a child I’m sure.
Obi gets so happy when I come home. When I lay down in bed he instantly jumps up and situates himself between my arm and body, and flops on his back and I rub his tummy. He sleeps beside me every night, and is always there when I need a snuggle.
Adopting Obi has made me such a better person. Not only is adoption the right way to go when getting a pet, but having a pet brings in such a good energy in a home, and he helps me get rid of my anxiety and helps me stay calm.
Obi is my sidekick until the end, and I’m so happy I have him as my petmate for life!
Having a pet is the best antidepressant medication you can get.

August 18, 2015 at 7:18 pmLove this! I’ve been fostering cats for a rescue organization and I’ve been “stuck” with two older cats that nobody wanted to adopt because everyone is looking for a playful kitten. Older cats usually have horrible stories; they deserve a good ending!

August 19, 2015 at 1:40 amCutie <3 looks like my Ralph. I recently lost a cat that was two when she came home with me. She was the best, most loving cat ever. I truly believe that she was thankful for being rescued.

August 19, 2015 at 3:29 pmRescued pets are the best, especially older ones (you usually get to skip the potty training stage when you pick an older one!)! My Evie-cat is from the humane society and she is one of the best kitties I’ve had <3

August 19, 2015 at 4:35 pmObi might be the cutest cat I’ve ever seen!!! (Besides my little man haha). I had an orange tabby cat growing up who was a rescue that we got at our local Humane Society, and now that I’ve moved away from home, we’ve rescued a little stray guy, Sam, that is the sweetest thing! I love your rescue story too! Cat adoption is definitely the way to go! I think cats, or really any pet for that matter, can turn everyone into a better person. 🙂 Obi is so photogenic too! Love it!
