To start off let me explain where Thompson is if you’ve never looked at a map. It’s eight hours north of Winnipeg/civilization. It’s remote, isolated, and above the 55 parallel. With that information it’s a given that a weekend getaway from the city was needed.
I’ve had the plan to go camping this summer for awhile, and although there were a few hiccups Achilles and I packed up my car for a four hour road trip to The Pas. We picked The Pas because of Clearwater Lake, and because our friends live there as well. We figured it was far enough to get away, but not far enough that we had to take vacation days.
Friday night we set up camp, had some hot dogs and marshmallows, and enjoyed a bonfire and nature. (I really enjoyed nature because my air mattress had a hole in it, so I slept on the ground all weekend!)
Saturday morning we cooked some breakfast over the fire, and I started a book about a young journalist moving to a small town in Canada to work at a community newspaper.
we spent the rest day at the beach, and I swear while we were swimming in the clear blue lake, I felt like I had escaped Manitoba. It was beautiful, and the pictures do not do it justice.
Getting away is key, and reconnecting with yourself. I did that this past weekend, mostly on Sunday and Monday, and I’ll talk about that in part two.
There’s no wifi in the forest, but they promised I’d find a better connection.
